How to Live Comfortably In A Small Apartment

How to Live Comfortably In A Small Apartment

Mumbai, the city that never sleeps and where people across the country come flocking in to chase their dreams. It all happens here but at a cost. A steep cost in fact. All you see on the television with the lavish food, houses etc. But now Mumbai gives you match box houses. Tight storage spaces where you can’t move and you feel like the walls are creeping in. Fortunately, living comfortably and affordably in a small apartment is a possibility.

Step by step go ahead and re-think and re-design the space available:

  1. Bedroom

Renting furniture is moderately cheap these days with a number of e-commerce options. What do you want in your bedroom? A bed of course! What if you could get a folding one which also translates into a couch? Even better, isn’t it? Next, a light décor can work wonders. Make use of tall decorative elements which can give the illusion of a larger space. Storage in Mumbai can always be an issue in the bedroom, so get creative with your use of the space by taking advantage of the area under the bed to stow unwanted or bulky items. Put on your thinking cap and see what and how things can be used.

  1. Kitchen

If it looks good, it will taste good for sure. What are we talking about here? Well it is the soul of the house – the kitchen! A well organized kitchen in a small apartment is always a welcoming sight. Keep the utensils and plates within arm’s length and the rest, store them over board. Keep clutter to a minimum and your brown appliances smaller.

  1. Living Room

Like the bedroom, use the same mantra here. These days a lot of furniture has built-in storage available. You can store books, bed sheets, unused clothes etc in them. This provides a perfect home storage solution to comfort without having to sacrifice space. In our previous blog posts, we spoke about how certain elements add to more space such as mirrors, use of light and so on. Make an impression!

  1. Bathroom

Lastly we come to the bathroom. Not much you can do with the smallest room of the house but nevertheless. Go simple and go monochromatic. This way, it gives an illusion of a grander room with a lot of space. For all your toiletries and other cleaning solutions, make use of the under the sink storage. If possible, install a few simple shelves for your soaps, towels, toothbrush and tooth paste.

Great Home Storage Ideas in Pune

Great Home Storage Ideas in Pune

We humans love to organise our homes, offices and other recreational spaces. It is because we are social animals. We are exposed to many things in the world every day. Change is constant and should be adopted in our lives.

Do you ever feel the need to change something at home? Are you happy with clothes just lying around the place? Remember, a happy house is a happy you. We get attached to worldly possessions easily. We need to adopt a simple attitude of “letting go”.

Therefore in this post we are going to provide you with tips and get your mind churning with ideas so you can find a place for everything and enjoy more leg room you dreamed of living in Pune.

Welcome Everything With Open Arms

Like we said before, humans want and need acceptance in this world. Therefore, we get attached to non-living things easily based on our perception and experience in the world. So, the first order of business is to take your hand and swipe everything off the canvas and start fresh.

Make a list of what “stays” and what “goes” – remember the stuff that matters.

If one doesn’t let go, one will remain with the clutter in the house forever. You’ve got to get rid of some of it first, even though I know this can be a daunting task.

Formulate a Calendar/Chart

The vision is to have a clean and tidy house isn’t it? Therefore in order to achieve nirvana, one must have smaller milestones. Form every day checklists, smaller goals, seek help from friends on how to organise your home in Pune. Start with the living room then go on to the other subordinate rooms. One step, one item at a time.

Challenge yourself to a one month cleaning program. See if you get the results out. You will soon notice the change you wish to see in your home.

We bet you can take the first step with great swagger. Let your creative juices and imagination run wild.

Big Storage Containers

Think Japan and China and if you visit their homes, you will notice they live with the basic necessities. Everything else is placed neatly and compactly in containers from the biggest to smallest. Storage containers recently have become a storage solution in Pune.

Remember these containers need to be washed and dried once every three months. Whatever the ad reads in the newspaper, dust collects and even the camphor tablets fade out eventually. When buying these new containers, always have a plan in mind and a place where you can store them.

You want to create less clutter and more space, not increase on it.

There are so many other ways in which you can contain clutter and yet keep a very hip and happening house. Donate to the needy and other charitable trusts; pass the old clothes to the younger ones in the family. Every product in your house has a second use. Either as containers or can be used in day to day activities.

Ultimately it comes down from years of experience and the constant bug of change. One will always want to make their home stand out in the neighbourhood. So invest time in planning your home, have a budget in place and let your imagination take over.

Are you ready to begin to get your home organized and find the right home storage solutions for you? Let’s begin!

If you’re stuck at some point in the process of elimination or storage go ahead and give BoxMySpace a call on 8767252252 or log on to our website. And fill in your details on the form we will keep you focused, motivated, and help you plan making your home the belle of the ball.

Simple Summer Home Renovations: Pune Edition

Simple Summer Home Renovations: Pune Edition

A home renovation project is the best thing that can happen for a family. The joy and tireless hours spent in remodeling your dream home, is always special. The trend is driven by people staying in their homes longer and needing more space or to redefine the space they currently have.

Home storage in Pune emerged due to this very reason. Space in India is sold at a very high premium. Therefore, people on occasion do clean their homes and make it tidy and clean.

If you’re that sort of person who loves to spruce up their digs every now and then and eliminate clutter in the process, you’ll be happy to hear, it is really cost-effective to remodel your house. With a small budget, get ready to flip your homes and make it the belle of the ball.

KITCHEN SPACE

This is the SOUL of the house. Cooking delicious and creative food only will be prepared if the kitchen is welcoming. Punekars love their seafood cooked and presented to them properly. Reserve a small amount of your remodeling budget and make a few renovations within your kitchen. It will work wonders. So go on, add surface space for food prep and service, as well as extra storage room to keep seldom-used equipment handy and out of reach from the children. If you already have a big kitchen there is nothing like it.

Home Storage in Pune

If you have a smaller kitchen, turn it into more of a functional one by increase decreasing clutter and gaining more storage space:

  • Install shelves to keep your spices and other condiments, near the cutting area (vegetables). These small spice containers hardly require any space.
  • Get yourself one of those tilt-out storage bins and racking system.
  • Make use of inexpensive cardboard panels that act like vertical dividers in cabinets to keep baking sheets and pan lids upright.
  • Similarly install hooks all around the kitchen so that you can hang your pots and pans.

BATHROOM SPACE

We do not have big bathrooms like those abroad. The bathroom space in Pune is limited yet you can do really cool things. Here below are a few things you can do.

  • Make use of vertical space and add wall cabinets or shelving. If you’re on a tight budget, wooden fruit crates can be painted and hung on walls for a clever, inexpensive storage solution.
  • Install peg rails around the perimeter of the bathroom for hanging towels.
  • If you have room, consider a built-in storage tower or a free-standing storage shelf.
  • For a more dramatic (and more costly) solution, have a carpenter create storage niches over your vanity using the space between wall joists.[3]
  • If you have absolutely no money to spend, consider turning an unused tub or shower stall into closet space. Just put up a pretty shower curtain on a tension rod, and you’ve found several cubic feet of free storage.
  • Add a folding station. This can be a simple board that drops down on a hinge and folds up to the wall when not in use.
  • Install a bank of shelves or upper cabinets for storing laundry products.
  • Hang a wall-mounted drying rack for delicate items.
  • With a little elbow grease and a bit of imagination, you can find or create additional storage space without breaking the bank.

Home storage in Bangalore – Tips and tricks

Before you go on to read this week’s new blog post, I would like you to keep this statement running in your head like a teleprompter.

“Keep. It. Simple. Silly.”

The idea of living simple is very difficult to fathom for a human being. We human beings are made up of wants that will not cease. Yet we must try and adopt the art of minimal living. In your daily routine, you are barraged with colours, objects and ideas that create a clutter in your mind. If you’re living the city life, the hustle and bustle of it really takes a toll on you. Also, if you ever visited the city of Bangalore, you live half of your life stuck in traffic cursing your luck.

Therefore, in order to keep a calm mind, you must adopt the minimal route. Well, what better place to do it than to begin with home storage in Bangalore. Bangalore, the evergreen IT city is known for its swanky yet spacious apartment space. But did it ever occur to you that you might not actually be using your apartment space to its full potential? Fret not! We have got you covered on that.

Take few post its and memorise these golden rules of minimalism.

  1. You have less mess to clean up.
  2. You shop less and save money.
  3. You make your life simpler.
  4. You get the space you paid for.
  5. You are at peace.

CHALK OUT A PLAN

When you look at your room, a tug-of-war goes on in your head on things that need to be kept or thrown out, also the constant need to go and shop is where clutter slow accumulates within your home. Therefore, it is essential to draw out a plan. Home storage in Bangalore can be easily done, if you plan right and systematically.
Alright then! Everything in your home will have a spot; it may not be currently there, but you will find or make space for said good. Sometimes, we over buy or own three to four similar products. For e.g. you recently bought two beautiful knives but you tend to be greedy and buy the whole set including a cleaver that will most definitely won’t be used at all. In other cases, we get attached to things, because maybe it is attached to some joyous memory or gifted to us or may be it has just helped you in some way. I tell you for a fact, if it is just lying around there, you need to cut the apron strings and dump it. There is no shame in that. You are cleaning a house that occupies an entire family, so evaluate, edit, keep and then store, and always remember to MAKE A PLAN – FOLLOW IT – #MANTRA

DE-CLUTTER ROOM BY ROOM

So now your plans are more or less set, it is time to go about ironing out and keep just what you need.

YOUR KITCHEN

This divine place is the heartbeat of the house. You can have long conversations, gossip while cooking sumptuous meals for your family. A full tummy is a happy mind. Before you cook your dinner, it is always inviting to see a clean and organised kitchen. So begin with the Tupperware or containers, which are old and never used, strip down your cutlery and see what makes the grade. Buy a small basket and place your cups, spoons, forks, ladles all in it. Add adjustable dividers in drawers; install panels to keep your spices and other flavouring additives. Keep the plates, above the sink in a cabinet. Finally, do a regular clean-up of things inside your kitchen. Add colour maybe, it will surely bring a smile on your face.

YOUR BEDROOM

This room speaks loudly about your personality. Open your cupboard/closet, have a gander at the overflowing clothes that just came crashing down on you. Hello, are you listening? If you step back for a minute, you will see that most of the clothes you buy will never be worn by you again. It is human nature, every day you feel different and therefore try new things. Open your suitcase under the bed and dump all the clothes that you’ve outgrown or not going to make a use of. Donate it to a charitable trust they can make good use of it. Home storage in Bangalore is of a great need currently in big cities and living simple is how the modern world is perceived. It is ideal to have a goal in mind. Say 5 tops, three jeans, a couple of shorts and three pairs of shoes. That should do it.

YOUR BATHROOM

Okay, so we do not have those lavish bathrooms that we see in the movies, we spare a small space of the apartment to do our daily duties and have a shower. Yet, this is the most, and I stress the most important room that needs to be hospital-like sterlised place. That being said, you must organise the cabinets in the bathroom. Have a soap box, your scrubs, toothpaste and toothbrush, washed, dried and kept in an air tight space. Rotate the towels so you get the same wear and will eventually all be ready to replace the same time, keeping the set the fresh and new.

5 Things To Immediately Do About Dorm Room Spaces

5 Things To Immediately Do About Dorm Room Spaces

When you move out of the comfort of your home that was spacious into a smaller shared room, instantly you get into a “basic living” mode. Dorms serve the basic purpose of living i.e. a bed, a side table and a cupboard.

Don’t worry there are others too in your same situation. To begin your year of freedom and independence why not start on the front foot with our simple dorm room organisation tips and enjoy the simple and easy joys of living.

Under the bed

This is your first space you would always want to store your things. You have seen your parents use it, and by trade you used use it too. In college, the space under your bed is vital; I know it sounds crazy. But you make do with what you have. College life is where we have to rough it out.

Wall storage

Your bed will be in one corner of the room. Use the blank wall as a storage or it can double up as a wall of memories. Go to any fittings store and you will find a range of stick pods, hooks and other storage articles for your room. This pods can hold on to your nail-polish, toiletries, stationary, keys and more. Instead of creating holes in the wall, which will raise an eyebrow at the university, go with easy-to-stick options.

Closet it

This is your Plan A, your cave, your kingdom (still thinking of a better superlative). Your closet is the main place where you will be putting your valued possessions. So forming various compartments needs to happen so you can make best use of the space. Make use of hangers, boot boxes, plastic containers, and your mom’s old bags and chart out a proper storage plan for your closet/cupboard. Also it best to bring only a few set of clothes, so you can keep a set at home and rotate it over the vacations.

Another great storage option when living in a dorm is your desk space. Along with your study material and stationary, use the additional space when not in use. Get rid of the old books, or donate them to the college you study in. Place all important documents in folders. When you are not using your study, you can place your plastic containers on it.

Are you the colour coordinated type?

Are you the colour coordinated type?

Colour coordination is one of the coolest ways to get your things organised and have fun at the same time. Colour has an association with us human beings. You could have a favourite colour that translates into your clothes, stationary, shoes, bags and so on. By applying this principle to your daily work processes, you can work faster and reduce stress.

Did you know most organisation gurus claim that using color is the most effective way of learning prioritisation and organisation? So to enhance your workspace or home space, use the colour coordination technique and watch it organise itself in ways you could have never imagined.

Take note.

However smart and bright you’re as a person, information comes in at a speed of light and it is very difficult to remember and process it. But now with colour, everything has fallen into line. Using colour to when jotting down important notes, for e.g. red means urgency, blue means that task can be pushed a little further.

File in, file out.

Adding a color strategy to a filing system is an enhancement that saves time in both retrieving and filing information. This can be especially helpful when dealing with large file categories such as clients, vendors or product lines. With the help of the colour, you compartmentalise your shelves or drawers which helps you navigate easily and saves you a lot on time.

Coloured closet.

Organising your closet by colour not only creates a look of organisation in your closet but it can also help you to identify where you have items in the most colour and the least colour. When it comes to colors, you have to decide individually what works best for you based on the season, how you wear them and how accessible you need them.

Office, office.

Adding even a little color to your office is sure to improve not only function at work but is likely to improve your confidence. You feel better when you can quickly locate what you need and can spend your time on tasks instead of looking for things.

The library.

Very often we organise our novels and comic books based on the genre or the times we have read it. But what if we re-organised it based on colour. Organising books by colour gives a unique look to any space. When you, group your books by shades and hues , that space now becomes your style.

The medication colourisation.

Mixing up medications is a big worry, especially with several family members sharing a medicine cabinet or if anyone in the household has bad eyesight. To keep pills separated by type or family member, try sticking a product with colour. For e.g. your dad’s red, mom likes green. So place your parents medicine in the cabinet under the specific colour and they wouldn’t miss a pill.

There is a dearth of ways you can colour coordinate your house or office space that will help you organised and never miss a deadline. We have just covered a few. Can you think of other things that need colour coordination, maybe vegetables, or photographs in frames?

We are all ears. Tell us in the comment section below.

Home organisation done the right way.

Home organisation done the right way.

We all dream to have a perfectly kept house with a gorgeous view. But alas we find that very hard in reality because we are emotional beings. There is a big tug-of-war going on in our heads with what to keep behind and what needs to go. Our human needs are never ending, and we always want more and more. It is because of our constant need to buy, is where the mess/clutter begins.
So here is the first step towards a more organized home; you need to downsize your possessions and that in turn will automatically create the spaces you need. Keep in mind maintaining this state of mind is another challenge altogether.

Before you start losing your marbles and start screaming, we have created a list of how to create a clean-up process that will calm your nerves and keep your home tidy.

  1. Clothes

Clothes as an item/good are more of a fad. It goes through a life cycle, where every Tom Dick and Harry is wearing it to satisfy their ego. There are others who decide to buy a specific piece of clothing & wait for the perfect occasion but it never happens. So here is what you do; take out all the clothes you purchased or had been gifted to you in the last two months. Sift through it and see if you still look good in it, keep it. If it doesn’t fit grab an empty basket and donate it away to a charitable trust.

  1. Musical instruments

We all have music idols in our life, or been bit by the music bug as a kid. So much so that we took it up to learn an instrument. A piano is easy to organise provided you don’t store it in the attic or basement or a dingy corner of your house as the heat and humidity can damage natural wood and cause corrosion. But many a times the enthusiasm dies out after a couple of classes and the instrument is just kept lying unattended. It is best to wrap them up in a soft cloth with paper or you can give it away to someone who will make use of it.

  1. Sports

Sports gear is seasonal in nature; you might not make use of it throughout the year. Another factor is your kids will outgrow their gear between seasons and therefore will only occupy the space at home. Why not donate them to a sports shop that sells second hand? You get the space you want & they get new customers, it a perfect win-win situation. Or else, if you wish to keep it, protect it from attracting rust with proper care and ample wrapping of paper or cloth.

  1. Furniture

A living room remains incomplete without some kind of furniture. Furniture is an extension of your personality. It could be a nice cushioned sofa or it could be a nice arm chair with a reading lamp. People in the modern society now adopt the minimalistic approach, or “JUST-WHAT-YOU-NEED”. To extend the longevity of your furniture, there are different ways one can restore its value. You could use bubble wrap so that the edges don’t get chipped off. Make use of a brown paper or non-ink paper to cover the vases or lamp shades and poles so they are safe when being transported. Alternatively, you can donate it to a near furniture shop so they can make use of it.

The benefits of home organization are plenty, but it takes a calm mind and a whole lot of effort to reach your desired results. Take your time, and start gradually turning your home by creating beautiful spaces.

Book it, store it.

Book it, store it.

Right from a being a toddler, we have had our parents reading stories to us. As we grow older, we switch to the larger novels. But at any moment, for a book lover we tend to purge our books, seal them in boxes and store them away to either make space or keep them for the next generation.

So we have got you some clever tips and tricks to overcome the challenges faced when storing books, with great ease.

  1. Stack ‘em up.

Your valuable story books and novels stored either flat or stored upright so you can read the spine correctly. PLEASE do not store books with the binding or spine pointing upward direction, it will ruin the binding; loosen the pages and perish quickly.

  1. Building bookshelves.

Make use of a spare wall by building small square compartments and place your books, so that they are easily accessible to all. It acts like a small library within your room and you create a cozy corner to get lost in fiction and let your imagination run wild.

  1. On the desktop.

Another great way of organising your books is by placing it at your work desk. So the next time you need to look up something, all your important books can be accessible within an arm’s reach.

  1. Floor to ceiling.

For a voracious, can’t-let-go kind of reader, this is your best bet at book storage. This is like your shrine within a house or room. Make use of the floor-to-ceiling shelves system to provide storage for books and display space for collections. Also just remember, that your beloved treasure trove needs a bit of protection from the sunlight, so when you’re not reading, shut the blinds so the pages remain safe from turning brown.

  1. Hide and seek.

Yes, just like the game, you can store your books using a wall and a building a foldable table-top. This idea can be integrated within your kids’ room, which is an absolute game changer in terms of space. Also, it acts as a place where the kids can do their homework, and an educational/knowledge zone.

  1. Window display.

Books not only expand your knowledge but also, give you a fresh perspective. Why not practice what you read? By building small shelves near your window, you add an aesthetic layer to the room. Go ahead and try it out, you might soon start running a home library. Keep the tea and biscuits ready.

Alternatively, a storage facility too is a great place to store your precious authors.

It is important to properly prepare and pack the books so they stay in good condition. Below are some tips:

  • Pack books in small or medium size boxes
  • For rare or limited edition books you will want to take special care, wrap them up in bubble wrap, or non-acidic archival paper to protect the surface from dirt and other natural elements.
  • Avoid wrapping books in aluminum foil or plastic bags.
  • Do not stuff your books, you can wreck their spines and damage it.
  • Label the boxes noting the content.

Books are great to have, to enjoy and to read. If you’re still looking to store them away safely, there is always a need for a good book storage solution.

One In, One Out – Seasonal Clothing Storage

One In, One Out – Seasonal Clothing Storage

Whether you are ready or not, the seasons come and go every four months. We all are happy that the winter Gods has blessed us with cool weather. So soon we’ll be trading our swim suits, sundresses and flip flops for warm and cozy sweaters. But remember packing away our delicate summer clothing is more complicated than just tossing them and shoving them under the bed.

We have got for you a simple 5 step process to storing all your clothes with great ease.

  1. Sort it out.

You are well into winters and your warmer clothes have begun to surface. With that, storage space becomes an issue. Many a times due to low cupboard space, you cram up the clothes which leaves it all crumpled up. To add to it, you’re not ready to part ways with certain ‘favourite’ clothing.

You might be still deciding what needs to go and what stays. Sit down with your clothes and take your time to segregate your clothing. Make one pile that you want to keep such as (couple pairs of jeans, a favourite tee, warm coats and so on). Doing this will automatically create a “pack-up” pile which can be stored. Do also consider a ‘donate’ pile, as you know we all out grow our clothes very quickly.

  1. Wash it.

Wait, you’re not yet ready to store your clothes away. Before you do, remember to give it a good wash. Why you ask? It not only keeps your clothes smelling fresh and looking crisp but also keeps all the bugs and pests. Again remember to sort out your clothes between hand wash (your whites, expensive clothes) and your regular summer clothes that can get a quick rinse in the washing machine.

P.S. A dry cloth will suffice to clean your shoes too or a very mildly damp sponge is another option. This way you don’t spoil the material of the shoes.

  1. Fold it.

Once all your clothes have gone through the wash and dry cycle, fold it neatly right from the heaviest to the lightest. Take a leaf out of your laundry guy; to avoid creasing and getting crushed, insert a sheet of newspaper amongst your clothes.

pants-389923_1920

  1. Box it.

Nowadays there are so many options to store your clothes in. If you’ve bought a new TV or a music system, don’t throw away those huge corrugated boxes. It might come in handy. But if you decide to store your clothes, go for plastic boxes. They are durable, light, reusable and pest-proof. You can also use your grandfather’s old suitcase, whatever is your fancy. Make sure you wash the containers and keep it dry to avoid your clothes from attracting moisture and pests. See to it that there is adequate air circulation inside for your clothes to breathe.

  1. Store it.

Remember all your medicine bottles or tablet strips that have this statutory message on it, “Store the medicine in a dark and cool place”? Well that is exactly with what you need to do with your clothes too. Dark closets and beneath your bed are great options when it comes to where to stash your storage boxes.

More Space, Better Living In The New Year

More Space, Better Living In The New Year

It is best to start the year off on the right foot by creating more free space in your beautiful home. Furthermore, remember reorganizing in the New Year has immediate positive effects mind, body and soul. It sets you up perfectly to tackle the challenges that lie in the future.

Follow these simple steps and we are sure that you will reclaim your identity, your home.

  1. Start at a point.

Before you hit the panic button, remember take it slow and one step at a time. Whatever has got you tossing in the bed at night, attack that first. It could be a pile of newspapers or a swollen up bedroom cupboard. Get that organized first. It does act like a great motivation catalyst.

  1. Do one job at a time.

It’s easy to get yourself pulled into another congested zone and leave the job you started. Stop right there! You’ll have two partially de-cluttered areas, and it will look like you’ve accomplished absolutely nothing. Stick to one part of one room until it’s complete.

  1. Just trash bag it.

One of your New Year’s resolutions should be “Think simple, live simple.” It is only then, when you can enjoy living with complete freedom. So pick up a bag and begin the clean process. Go around the house, one room at a time and see what you really need in your house. Leave your sentiments aside and go for it. It is the only way forward.

  1. Set a time limit for everything.

Don’t say, ‘today I’ll clean my bedroom’. Instead, say, ‘I’ll spend some time sorting out the kitchen ware; next week I’ll work on sports equipment.’ JUST DO IT! Do not put off what you can do today for tomorrow, it will end up not being done. Also put your heart into what you are doing, do not leave it half baked. Finish what you have started; it is okay to go a little over time.

  1. Every item has a “home.”

This should be your ONLY mantra, because if you don’t have a place to put a good, it will just lie there. Before you create a permanent home for any object, make sure it’s something that is truly useful, important, valuable or otherwise worthy of keeping.

  1. Stay motivated.

Yes, the hardest part in reorganize your home is to take things slow and keep pushing until you finish it off. Remember, “Rome wasn’t built in a day.” Make it part of your daily routine, or figure out a day in a week. It’s a small, short activity that you do so your home works well and looks good.

  1. A calmer mind and a happier you!

Your mind under stress can sometimes be all over the place, and while clearing the physical mess from your environment, your mind might need some direct attention too. Imagine the relief and joy you would feel if you knew that everything in your life was in its place, and all was well.

So to end this eventful year on a  ‘wise’ note, whatever you do small or big, take your first step with excitement. How you remove or organise your clutter is completely up to you. Godspeed!

Have a memorable and happy New Year.
