The must haves

When designing your office, space is your biggest enemy. Everything and anything eats up space greedily. Therefore, what you must do is make a list of the essentials for your office to be functional. One will need filing cabinets, shelves, adequate lighting, and a work table to keep the laptop, a notepad and a pen to be able to spread out project work and comfortable seating for the employees. Think minimal, think productive.

Storage is the key

Like we covered earlier, one must straighten up the office in terms of storage. Sometimes the office is not welcoming when you find things just being thrown out in disarray. The key to making things easier is to delegate space for your things. With the help of an office storage service, you save a lot of time and effort. You become more efficient and have things available on the go. Follow a system that works for you, otherwise there will be a lot of clutter and that will lead to depression and increase levels in stress. Follow the old adage – a place for everything and everything in its place.

Reward for cleanest desk

The desk – where the magic will happen needs to be inviting. Here you have your laptop, your scribble pad and a pen. You keep your current projects and bills that need to be paid. So in fact, it is a high traffic area 24/7. Therefore you need to have this place in tip-top shape otherwise it will hamper your productivity. Have a checklist of your daily activities. At the end of each night, before wrapping, up see what needs to be done for the next day and store your clutter away from the work desk.

The need for office supplies

Stationary adds vibrancy in a dull office. Nowadays you get tons of cool stationary items online. Pick a few of them and bring them to your office. Always have a backup of things when you run out of stationary. Invest in smaller drawers, baskets, pencil holders etc. Don’t let a cool idea slip away from your head. In fact carry a pen in every pocket you have on you.

Go current

Adopting the minimal approach does work wonders. A simple rule you should follow: If it’s not current, store it somewhere else. Out of sight is out of mind. It doesn’t take much of your time, all you need to do is keep it simple.

Feel light

How can you forget having the right lighting in the room? That would be an absolute sacrilege. Installing the correct light setting in your room makes it look comfortable. Add a yellow desk lamp, so you don’t need to squint when reading an important document. A recent study shows that adding small lamps (3-4), you let your mind relax and makes you happy and content. Try it! Light up your office. See and feel the change.

Organising The Perfect Library In Pune

Novels and story books take you out of reality and let you dream with your eyes wide open. There is something so calming yet exhilarating when one reads an engrossing novel. Each novel has a memory attached to it, but also takes space in your bedroom or living room. So how do you keep your favourite novels intact and yet make space for more?

In this week’s article, we will give you some simple home library organisation tips and tricks that will appeal to your aesthetic as well as emotional senses all at one go.

So before you pick on a strategy to organise your library in Pune, one must get down to the nitty gritty of the task.

Follow this simple checklist:
a) How many books there are that need to be organized?
b) How much shelf space there is for all of the books?
c) How often will you make a purchase of new books?

Once these answers get clear in your head, you can go forward with the planning of your library.

The reason behind doing this exercise is that, you will get a sense of how to organise, whether you need an extra shelf to be built and so on. More so when you’re half way done, you will start making changes.

So now on to the different methods of storing your books.

Go ABCD route

The first thing we learn in school is the ABCD i.e. the English alphabets. This strategy is commonly employed by many across the globe. It is an easy and efficient way to organize your books so you don’t need to waste time looking for it. But one must decide which way to organise; either auhor’s name or in terms of the book name. Putting books in alphabetical order based on the last letter of an author’s name in a title helps make a shelf look more oddly arranged. Now if you do use this method, you must have a good memory you can rely on. Imagine having placed books where the author’s name starts with a T or a P and is silent. Instant hara-kiri. This method of book organisation is very reliable and as simple as A for apple.

Title is important

When we say title, we do not mean British Royalty like “Sir”, “Madame” et al, in fact we show respect to the author’s title. Yes, many readers remember the book titles easier than their author’s name. Go do a quick survey and you won’t be disappointed. Approach your bookshelves as if they are a table you are arranging for a large gathering – you would be a bad host indeed if you purposely placed foes next to each other and ex-lovers right across the table from one another. Books are also paired like a good wine and a little bit of cheese.

Colour me silly

Sometimes a book/novel can be boring and story just redundant; but one buys the book because of the cover page. Colour in psychology terms plays a vital role when reading a book. In fact many a times, if a reader wants to read something soothing, she will pick a blue coloured novel, just to release the stress. This type of book organisation in Pune, appeals to the aesthetic side of your brain. It will look pleasing to the eye, even though the books are placed in a chaos. One will find a romantic novel beside a murder mystery, (hey wouldn’t that be an excellent movie). You can create your very own man made rainbow in the living room.
The other sub method in this type is to group them by weight or size, where one keeps the heavier books at the foot of the bookshelf and lighter and easily accessible books at arm’s length.

There are other several ways one can make a library look neat and welcoming. We would love to hear your ideas as well. Post your ideas in the comment section below and maybe you could win an award! (Yes, we do give out awards too)

Modern Kitchen Practices

Ask any person to describe what a kitchen means to them; you will get a vivid range of answers. Soul of the house, sweet conversations, where love starts, brings family together and so forth. But all of them have one main villain – CLUTTER. Kitchens in our modern time are designed to be functional. Alas! We do not follow this thumb rule. We have cookware we do not use, gadgets that are still in mint condition and crockery just to make up the numbers. The kitchen is and always will be a perplexing place to organize. So whether you have a big or small kitchen in Pune, it doesn’t matter. Adjusting and making the most of it is where the challenge lies.

We have got you a list of ideas that will hopefully spark a revolution in your kitchen.

The Kitchen Counter

This is the first area that needs your attention. You set up all your ingredients and utensils and leave it as it is and then dump everything in the sink for later. Segregate your counter mentally into cutting and placing area. The aromas of the food get lost when there are too many cooks spoiling the broth, literally. Try and get more spacious and make good use of your time. You will instantly see space open up.

Racks That Stacks

Clinging, clanging and clonking, you stuff your lids into a tiny little space that will often just burst out when you open your cabinets. It is a challenge. Fortunately, if you have a small compartment or rack installed just above the sink, then you’re golden.

Plate Racking

Crash! You just broke an expensive China ceramic plate while storing it. Your whole world has come crashing down. Well calm down, you can cut down your risk of breaking the next set. All you have to do is find a slot in your kitchen dedicated to your crockery.

Spoons And Forks And Everything Sharp

Cutlery is a crucial element in the kitchen. They are the supporting actors to a meal and bring the balance needed. Therefore, it is the best practice to store them in separate cases or containers. This keeps your sharp objects safe from kids, stays hygienic and you will never lose a piece of cutlery the next time.

The Perfect Pantry

There are a number of ideas to make your pantry stand out. You can have pull-out drawers, spice racks, cleans towels and more. You must have an idea as to what and how your final kitchen should look like. Sometimes adding colour to your pantry will give it an oomph factor. Make a list, follow a process, it won’t be hard.

A person who understands space and knows what is needed in a pantry will spend less time, effort and money than the others.

More Space, Better Living In The New Year

It is best to start the year off on the right foot by creating more free space in your beautiful home. Furthermore, remember reorganizing in the New Year has immediate positive effects mind, body and soul. It sets you up perfectly to tackle the challenges that lie in the future.

Follow these simple steps and we are sure that you will reclaim your identity, your home.

  1. Start at a point.

Before you hit the panic button, remember take it slow and one step at a time. Whatever has got you tossing in the bed at night, attack that first. It could be a pile of newspapers or a swollen up bedroom cupboard. Get that organized first. It does act like a great motivation catalyst.

  1. Do one job at a time.

It’s easy to get yourself pulled into another congested zone and leave the job you started. Stop right there! You’ll have two partially de-cluttered areas, and it will look like you’ve accomplished absolutely nothing. Stick to one part of one room until it’s complete.

  1. Just trash bag it.

One of your New Year’s resolutions should be “Think simple, live simple.” It is only then, when you can enjoy living with complete freedom. So pick up a bag and begin the clean process. Go around the house, one room at a time and see what you really need in your house. Leave your sentiments aside and go for it. It is the only way forward.

  1. Set a time limit for everything.

Don’t say, ‘today I’ll clean my bedroom’. Instead, say, ‘I’ll spend some time sorting out the kitchen ware; next week I’ll work on sports equipment.’ JUST DO IT! Do not put off what you can do today for tomorrow, it will end up not being done. Also put your heart into what you are doing, do not leave it half baked. Finish what you have started; it is okay to go a little over time.

  1. Every item has a “home.”

This should be your ONLY mantra, because if you don’t have a place to put a good, it will just lie there. Before you create a permanent home for any object, make sure it’s something that is truly useful, important, valuable or otherwise worthy of keeping.

  1. Stay motivated.

Yes, the hardest part in reorganize your home is to take things slow and keep pushing until you finish it off. Remember, “Rome wasn’t built in a day.” Make it part of your daily routine, or figure out a day in a week. It’s a small, short activity that you do so your home works well and looks good.

  1. A calmer mind and a happier you!

Your mind under stress can sometimes be all over the place, and while clearing the physical mess from your environment, your mind might need some direct attention too. Imagine the relief and joy you would feel if you knew that everything in your life was in its place, and all was well.

Have a memorable and happy New Year.

Happy boxing!

SPACE: PERCEPTION AND EFFECT

Think about the word ‘space’ and our perception varies from person to person. As humans we desire for space. It shapes our personality and makes us unique. Not to forget the fact that we live in a country that is infused with a diverse culture and therefore it is inevitable that each cultural value will eventually shape our beliefs.

The world views space and structure mainly through visual elements. Therefore a brick, tree, door, window, and carpet are only a few visual elements that combine and allow us to experience space.

mumbai-four-seasons-hotel4 - iliketowastemytime(Image courtesy: iliketowastemytime.com)

Remember space is all about perspective. So, depending on our position in society, we inhabit space differently. Every minute of our lives we are in physical dialogue with the space. The spaces we occupy directly influence our psychological well-being and creative output.

To elaborate more on this concept of space, we take a few examples to understand what space means to us.

At public bathrooms in restaurants/pubs/motels, our minds immediately switch to a defensive one where our prime notion of cleanliness and privacy is at an all time high. It is a ‘necessity’.  On the flip side, think about your home; it is one place where your defenses are off, and you’re more relaxed. It is where your true identity is shaped.

We also see the importance of a simple queue. Instead of hoarding the counter, a queue restores sense of order in society by eliminating the class barrier. Similarly, a hotel room’s main goal is to make you feel as if you’re the first person to live in it. In offices, you’re surrounded by white walls in square boxes. Your soft-board therefore when filled with personal memories such as a photograph or your kid’s drawings, will create a sense of being close to your loved ones at all times, thus increasing productivity.

ocean beach sea shore tropical palm trees 1920x1080 wallpaper_www.wall321.com_49 - wall321(Image courtesy: wall321)

In terms of colour and the way space is used, the human mind reacts differently to situations. Say, you give a man a puzzle in a tight room, where the ceilings are low. He will complete the puzzle quickly, as there is a sense of “restriction”. Similarly you feel more relaxed with the colour blue as it signifies open skies, vast oceans, and beaches, because airy like spaces help us feel free.

And finally, there is an ‘escape’ space, where for a few minutes or hours, one would wish to get out of the hands from ‘family, colleagues and bosses’. It could be anything; a game on your phone, a walk in your area or simply get lost in your thoughts.

Man with coffee videezy(Image courtesy: Videezy)

Therefore, to put it in simple terms, the psychology of space is the perfect interplay between the man and space.

We would love to hear your “out of the box” thoughts on space.
